Flip flop organ
A sound object which combines its ambition to interaction and involvement with the simplicity of its use and materials: in this way, plastic pipes come back to a new life. A public object, a collective musical instrument, a street organ where notes are played by the percussion of flip flops on it.
The length of pipes is defined studying how the sound works in organs. The longer the pipe is, the deeper the note plays: this is the basic rule which has driven the project and defined the result shape. A special analysis was conducted on sound diffusion, note frequencies and the relation between pipe diameter and length. The result is an organ which “keyboard” is composed by four octaves of a pentatonic scale (E-G-A-C-D). That kind of scale keeps a particular meaning and has been chosen instead of the classical one since it is the scale of traditional Mediterranean songs.
